Avatar: The Last Airbender is an American animated television series created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. It aired on Nickelodeon from February 21, 2005 to July 19, 2008. The show combines the styles of anime and American cartoons, and relies on the imagery of various East-Asian, Inuit, Indian and South-American societies.
The series follows the adventures of a twelve-year-old boy named Aang and his friends (Katara, Sokka, Toph Beifong and Zuko) as they travel across the world in order to save it from Fire Lord Ozai's evil plans. Along their journey they must master all four elements of bending (waterbending, earthbending, firebending and airbending), while encountering many different cultures along the way. The group must also deal with Zuko's past as he struggles to find his place between his loyalty to his father and his desire for redemption.
The series became extremely popular during its three season run; it was praised for its art direction, humor, cultural references and character development. It won several awards including Annie Awards for best music in an animated television production in 2006 as well as a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program in 2008. The Last Airbender has since been adapted into a live action film directed by M. Night Shyamalan which released in 2010.
