Koyomi Araragi, a high school student, is attacked and bit by a vampire during the yearly Japanese Golden Week in the anime Bakemonogatari. He has seen bizarre supernatural creatures like ghosts and demons ever since. His classmate Hitagi Senjougahara, with whom he has never spoken, is one of these strange occurrences. She trips and tumbles down the stairs, but Koyomi manages to catch her just in time. He discovers her secret as a result—she is remarkably thin. Hitagi believes that since she encountered a peculiar crab, things have been that way. Koyomi eventually makes the decision to assist Hitagi with her secret, so he takes her to Meme Oshino, a middle-aged guy who recently helped him with his vampire problem.
