A classmate extends an invitation to student Kaname Sudou to play the smartphone app Darwin's Game. When Kaname launches the program, a snake jumps out of his screen and bites him in the neck, knocking him out. He discovers there is no bite mark on his neck when he awakens in the hospital room. He reflects about his encounter and writes it off as a hallucination as he drives home.
He opens the app once more on the train as his curiosity takes the better of him. He exhales a sigh of relief and chooses to begin his first match because it appears to be similar to any other fighting game. His immediate relief, however, is short-lived as his gaming opponent unexpectedly appears in front of him and tries to fend him off with a knife. Kaname counts one and one together while desperately running for his life and is forced to come to terms with the fact that Darwin's Game is not just any game but a cruel struggle for survival.
