Even though he was known as "Sugimoto the Immortal" by everyone, he took it upon himself to maintain his now widowed wife and went in pursuit of wealth after his buddy perished in the war.

He keeps coming across hints in his quest for these riches that point to a secret gold cache held by dishonest thieves. He makes every effort to find the mentioned treasure along with Asirpa, an Ainu girl who saved his life in the frigid northern areas, and frequently runs into other people who are hunting for it as well.
