The five girls, Triela, Henrietta, Angelica, Rico, and Claes, appear to be entirely ordinary. In a dorm, they share their lives and have fun together, but the girls are not as ordinary as they look on the outside. They have human bodies with mechanical body parts; they are cyborgs. Despite the fact that this title is merely a disguise, they are all employed by Section 2 of the State Society for Social Welfare. An entity that executes directives from the nation's corrupt government is responsible for this. A subdivision called Section 2 accepts kids who have physical disabilities and gives them prosthetic limbs. The majority of the kids have very traumatic pasts, therefore they are immediately put through conditioning. While simultaneously helping to build a person's commitment to the group, this works to both erase the past and unpleasant memories.
Each of the cyborg children has an adult partner, known as a "operator," with whom they work as a fratello unit (fratello is Italian for "sibling") on their missions. The females occasionally develop a very strong bond with their operator, one that actually resembles a sister relationship, but things are not always easy. However, it doesn't appear like the group acts out of pure altruism; rather, the kids are given difficult tasks and retrained as assassins. But how long can this continue?
