In his lifetime, the renowned swordsmith Kiki Shikizaki produced 1,000 swords. A state's success in battle increases with the number of swords it has. The Shogun amassed 988 of the swords after his victory, although these were only "practice pieces." The pinnacle of Kiki's career was the final twelve swords. A single person could easily defeat a small army with any one of them due to their extreme potency.

Togame, the strategist for the shogun, was tasked with locating these swords. She initially hired a ninja, but as soon as they got their hands on a sword because of how valuable each one was, the entire ninja clan turned against her. She then trusted another warrior to help her, but he kept the sword for himself. Shichika, the seventh and final pupil at Kyotoryuu school, is now her only chance. He doesn't need money because he and his sister reside on an island far from civilisation. Shichika does not feel the need to provide his assistance because his sword school spars without swords, but that is about to change.
