A isolated community in the middle of Japan is having trouble since lately many of its farm animals have been found decaying and severely wounded after every new moon night. Kohachi Inugami, a detective who specializes in occult entities and happenings, is immediately engaged because things can't continue this way and no one has an explanation for these incidents.
When he first enters the village, he notices a boy working by himself in the field in the middle of the day. Kohachi, who is curious like a detective, asks around at his hostel and discovers that the youngster is actually named Kabane, though others only refer to him as Dorotabou (a nickname for a youkai who lives in fields), and that because of his offensive odor, he should stay away from the other visitors.
Because of the impending new moon, Kohachi stays with the youngster for a time and learns that he is not a typical human, but rather is one of a number of hybrid beasts, one of which the investigator believes is to blame for the animal killings. In order to further his inquiry, Kohachi enlists Kabane, speculating on an arrangement that goes beyond their current arrangement.
