Shouko Komi can't communicate, the subtitle of the anime Komi Can't Communicate, foreshadows this.
At Itan Private School, which has a reputation for being a place full of eccentrics and outcasts, Komi is a new student. Hitohito Tadano, who strives to be as ordinary as possible, is sandwiched between all of these eccentric pupils. His objective for the upcoming years at his new school is to blend in and not cause any major stirs. But when he discovers that Komi is his seatmate, his strategy is doomed. She is the most attractive student in the entire school, which results in jealously from his peers as well as some of the attention that falls on him.
Komi evades Tadano's attempts to speak with her each time. Tadano tries to talk to Komi again when the two are apart, but she flees. However, Tadano manages to stop her by pointing out an obvious fact that nobody else, not even the teacher, is even aware of because they have been taken in by Komi's allure. Even though Tadano is unsure, he musters up the confidence to ask her the question that would elevate their connection from that point on: "Aren't you good at talking to people?"
The two have been corresponding ever since using the chalkboard. Komi shares with Tadano her desire to make 100 friends. She is informed by Tadano that she has already made her first friend through him, and he also pledges to assist her in making the next 99 friends. Are they two going to survive? And how would their romance progress?
