Metroid Prime is a first-person action-adventure game developed by Retro Studios and Nintendo for the GameCube video game console. It was released in North America on November 17, 2002. The game follows bounty hunter Samus Aran as she attempts to retrieve an artifact from the planet Tallon IV. The player controls Samus as she explores the world, battles enemies and bosses, collects power-ups, solves puzzles, and uncovers the secrets of Tallon IV.
Metroid Prime features a variety of gameplay elements, including exploration, combat and puzzle solving. Players control Samus from a first-person perspective while exploring Tallon IV's various environments. As they progress through the game, players can collect power-ups that grant them access to new areas and abilities such as enhanced weapons or special visors that allow them to scan their environment for useful information. Combat plays an important role in Metroid Prime; players must battle enemies with Samus' arsenal of weapons and missiles in order to progress through the game. Puzzles also play a large part in Metroid Prime; players must find items or manipulate objects in order to progress further into the game's story.
