William James Moriarty initially appears to be your standard late 19th-century nobleman, but appearances can be deceiving because he views himself as a sort of rescuer and helper to those who don't know how to assist themselves. But anyone who believes Moriarty is operating only out of altruism would be misled in this instance as well; the young man is one of the greatest criminal geniuses of his day, and the staging of perfect crimes is his greatest passion.
