Ninja Gaiden is a side-scrolling action-adventure video game developed and published by Tecmo for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1988. It was released in Japan as Ninja Ryūkenden (忍者龍剣伝, lit. “Legend of the Ninja Dragon Sword”) and in the PAL region as Shadow Warriors. It follows the story of a modern-day ninja named Ryu Hayabusa as he seeks revenge for the death of his father at the hands of a mysterious ninja clan.
The game consists of eight levels, each of which is divided into multiple stages. Players must battle their way through hordes of enemies and obstacles in order to progress. The game also features platforming elements, as well as puzzles and power-ups that can be used to increase Ryu's strength and abilities. In addition, players can collect weapons and items to help them in their quest.
Ninja Gaiden was praised for its graphics and sound, as well as its challenging gameplay. It has since been released on multiple platforms and spawned several sequels and spin-offs. It is widely considered to be one of the greatest games of all time.
