Set in late Muromachi period (approximately 1336 to 1573) Japan with fantasy elements, the story follows the young Emishi prince Ashitaka's involvement in a struggle between the gods of a forest and the humans who consume its resources. The term "Mononoke" (物の怪 or もののけ) is not a name, but a Japanese word for a spirit or monster. Along with Princess Mononoke, it is also used to refer to spirits such as kami and yōkai.
Princess Mononoke was released in Japan on July 12th 1997 where it was highly successful commercially becoming the highest grossing film in Japan of all time until Titanic was released later that year. It was dubbed into English and distributed in North America by Miramax Films with its original title left intact; however some changes were made to make it more marketable to Western audiences including editing out some scenes of violence. Despite this Princess Mononoke received critical acclaim from both Eastern and Western critics alike making it one of Studio Ghibli's most successful films worldwide.
