An event that has come to be known as the Great World Blaze happened thirty years ago. In the process, many more perished due to widespread spontaneous combustion, which ultimately resulted in the halving of the world's population. The first so-called Burnish, or persons with the power to control fire, also emerged about this time. Burnish are feared, loathed, and persecuted by the majority of society because their powers are primarily destructive and occasionally out of control.
Many of these unique individuals now live in secrecy, but a gang going by the name of Mad Burnish consistently makes news by carrying out terrorist assaults in the Republic of Promepolis's capital city. Often, Burning Rescue, a unique form of fire department, steps in to put out fires brought on by Burnish by using a variety of tools, including ordinary mechas. Galo Thymos, their newest recruit, engages in a brutal fight with Lio Fotia, the Mad Burnish leader, but this is not the first time they will come into contact. Galo soon learns that good and evil cannot be so simply distinguished and that the world is far more dangerous than initially thought.
