Lawrence Kraft is a nomadic trader who makes a living by offering his goods in continually emerging cities. One day he arrives at Pasroe, where there is a harvest festival going on. Every year, the locals participate in this celebration to honor the goddess of the harvest, Holo. But one evening Lawrence discovers a young woman in his wagon who later reveals herself to be the wolf goddess Horo. She wants to travel with Lawrence to her old house, but he doesn't seem very enthusiastic about the notion.
