The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya follows the high school life of Haruhi Suzumiya, a lively, energetic and eccentric girl, and her strange antics. Haruhi is the leader of an unofficial school club called the SOS Brigade, which she created to investigate mysterious events and happenings.
The club consists of three additional members: Kyon, an intelligent and easygoing male high school student who often finds himself dragged into Haruhi's antics; Yuki Nagato, an introverted, soft-spoken bookworm who is actually an alien; and Mikuru Asahina, a timid and cute moe character who is actually a time traveler.
Throughout the story, Kyon and the other members of the SOS Brigade are dragged into various adventures and misadventures by Haruhi. The story often follows Kyon as he attempts to keep Haruhi entertained, while also trying to keep her from discovering the supernatural secrets of himself and his friends.
As the story progresses, Kyon discovers that Haruhi may have unknowingly created a new reality, and he must work to protect the world from her.
