Whisper of the Heart is a 1995 Japanese animated romantic drama film directed by Yoshifumi Kondō and written by Hayao Miyazaki based on the 1989 manga of the same name by Aoi Hiiragi. It was animated by Studio Ghibli for Tokuma Shoten, Nippon Television Network and Hakuhodo, and distributed by Toho.
The film tells the story of Shizuku Tsukishima, an inquisitive young girl living in Tokyo who discovers a mysterious cat statuette named "The Baron" while browsing through antiques with her friend. The statuette leads her to Seiji Amasawa, a talented violin maker's apprentice whom she gradually falls in love with. As she grows closer to Seiji and his dreams, Shizuku develops her own aspirations and learns to pursue them wholeheartedly.
The film touches upon themes such as following one's dreams, growing up, self-discovery and first love. It has won numerous awards including the Japan Academy Prize for Animation of the Year at the 19th Japan Academy Prize ceremony in 1996.
